Chapter 21

Lyridis

For the first time in days, all members of my micro-state were sitting together at dinner. I wanted to make use of the opportunity to discuss an important issue. I had been putting this problem off for too long. Days had passed since the liberation of the slaves and I was running out of time.

“The most important repairs to the ship are almost complete. We must greet our guests,” I said to my council of advisers, no friends. “Before we face them, we must determine what we will represent. So far, our decisions have been more spontaneous than deliberate. But the consequences are so far-reaching that I would like to discuss these things again.”

My friends looked at me curiously. I was not usually in the habit of beating around the bush.

“We have two humans, four Vudari, two Laim AIs and two Sem’Pari. And maybe a Toi-Toi will join us one day. We define ourselves as an autonomous state and are not beholden to any empire. We have declared ourselves a monarchy, but what does that mean specifically? What laws do we live by? What are our values, our visions? And lastly, we need a sensible name for our country.”

This is where I paused. Had I just embarked on a politician’s speech?

“To be a state it takes much more . . . We need a culture, history, a society. Sure, NT4 is our home, but what is our identity?”

My words lead to a vibrant discussion. To my delight, Rose also participated energetically. In the end, we had a basis for our new identity, for our state: freedom! We established that the basis for our coexistence was that everyone was free to make their own decisions. One’s freedom ended where the freedom of one’s neighbor began. Our society as a whole also had the right to develop and limited the freedom of the individual. Exactly how would be determined through laws. As a form of government, we stuck with monarchy, but limited to five years. A new queen or king would be elected every five years. Well, not really a monarchy, more like democracy. But who cared about names? If NT4 obtained more citizens, we would consider the establishment of a parliament.

We called ourselves the “free spirits” and we gave the state the name Lyridis, which meant something like “Free Land” among the Sem’Pari.

“Now we have to figure out what we want to offer the five hundred fellow residents. If we want to take everyone home, we will be travelling for the next few years. Is there any other way?”

“It would be enough to bring them to a Sem’Pari base. According to the Galactic Law on Slave Sacrifice, every member of the galactic community is obliged to help them and take them home. The Raptoe are allies of the Vudari, but in principle, they also fall under this law,” Adonis explained.

“I bet the Raptoe were here to negotiate. They were guests and have only recently advanced to slaves,” I surmised.

“Very likely. Maybe we should get to know everyone first and then decide what to do.
